Because Pilates is a gentle and precise form of exercise it is endorsed by most therapists, doctors and surgeons. Any musculo-skeletal complaint you have should be checked by a medical professional first. Pilates takes its place as post-rehabilitative care. We cannot diagnose or treat you.
Why should I do Pilates?
Pilates is suitable for men and women of all ages and abilities. It is an extremely safe and gentle system, which aims to strengthen all muscle groups, particularly the weaker ones. Pilates does not need to replace your existing fitness regime (unless it is causing you pain) it can enhance it. It can strengthen you through a complete range of motion of all joints. It can improve your golf swing if you are a golfer, it can improve your turn out if you are a dancer, and it can improve the stabilisation of your pelvis if you are lifting toddlers all day. Pilates can be very specific to help you use your body efficiently and successfully how you need to.
What training should I look for in a Pilates Teacher?
There are many different Pilates classes around, some taught by teachers who have only had a few days training. Other sessions may incorporate pilates principles although the teacher may have never received any training at all. These classes may be taught by excellent teachers but without the correct training and expertise they may cause more harm than good, this is not ideal if you have specialist needs or want personalised attention.
Matwork Pilates - The Register of Exercise Professionals (Reps) recently created a new framework in which Pilates Teachers could demonstrate their competence and qualifications to do their job. The Level 3 Pilates Advanced Instructor Status was introduced to give customers the confidence that they are receiving the level of service that should be provided. Teachers have a membership card which is to be produced on request and customers can check the status of their instructors on line at www.exerciseregister.org
Apparatus Pilates -The main Pilates organisations require at least 400 hours of teaching, and demonstration work prior to taking an exam or gaining any certification. These organisations generally have a teacher database where you can verify your instructors profile. Certificates can again be produced on request.
